Veolia Romania expands into Integrated Utility Services with acquisition of General Me.el Electric

The transaction marks a strategic milestone for Veolia, strengthening its position as an integrated provider of utility services in Romania. It also reflects the company’s global commitment, under its GreenUp program, to accelerate the ecological transition and expand investments in renewable energy.

With this acquisition, Veolia Romania adds critical expertise in electrical installations and photovoltaic projects to its portfolio, at a time when the energy transition is both a national and European priority.

Ranked among Romania’s top 10 companies in its field, General Me.el Electric has been active for more than 30 years and has delivered projects with an installed capacity exceeding 200 MW. Its portfolio includes a 62 MW solar parkcurrently under construction and battery storage systems with a combined capacity of over 15 MWh.

“Acquiring General Me.el Electric is a strategic step that allows us to expand into a sector with high growth potential,” said Mădălin Mihailovici, CEO of Veolia Romania. “For 25 years we have been innovating and consolidating our presence on the Romanian market, often by integrating local champions into the Veolia Group. This transaction strengthens our expertise and enhances our ability to deliver sustainable investments that modernize and develop Romania’s energy infrastructure. Together with GME’s shareholders, management, and specialists, we will accelerate the company’s growth and deliver flagship projects in the energy sector, just as we do today in water resource management.”

The integration of GME also allows Veolia to leverage its know-how in electrical systems to enhance the energy efficiency of Romania’s water and wastewater networks, where it is already the market leader. Future projects will focus on reducing the carbon footprint and ensuring long-term energy self-sufficiency for critical infrastructure.

The move aligns with Veolia’s GreenUp strategy, the Group’s global initiative designed to speed up the shift toward renewable energy and sustainable solutions. By bringing GME into the fold, Veolia is drawing on local innovation and proven expertise to support Europe’s broader decarbonization goals.

General Me.el Electric has seen steady growth, with 2024 revenues exceeding €37 million, up 22% from the previous year. Based on its current pipeline of projects and increasing demand for energy infrastructure modernization, the company forecasts it will reach €50 million in annual turnover within the next five years.

Following the transaction, Veolia Romania will integrate GME’s 180 employees, most of whom are directly involved in operations. The company’s management team will retain a minority stake and remain actively engaged to ensure business continuity, while also benefitting from Veolia’s international resources and expertise.

The deal follows Veolia’s acquisition in 2024 of another Romanian company, through which it now implementsGeoExchange, an advanced system using geothermal energy and heat pumps for heating, cooling, and hot water supply. Veolia also continues to develop solutions for capturing and reusing energy from wastewater and industrial processes.
