MetaWealth secures €19 million financing for 50 MW/100 MWh BESS project in Romania

MetaWealth has reached financial close on its Dumbrava battery energy storage project in Neamț County, securing a €19 million financing package that includes a €10 million senior facility from CEC Bank.

he 50 MW/100 MWh standalone BESS is the first project to reach financial close under MetaWealth’s Romanian storage programme, which currently includes projects in development with a combined capacity of approximately 850 MWh and an estimated investment of €160 million.

The financing package comprises a €10 million, seven-year senior loan from CEC Bank and €9 million in sponsor and investor equity. The Topolinski family is contributing €5.5 million, while €3.5 million comes from institutional and private investors through MetaWealth Luxembourg and its authorised distribution partners, including €500,000 from BRD Asset Management.

The Dumbrava project is already under construction, with grid connection approved and major equipment packages prepared for delivery. The project is being developed with Parapet Group as EPC contractor, with commercial operation targeted for April 2027.

The two-hour storage system will be used to shift electricity from lower-price periods to periods of higher demand and prices, while also supporting grid balancing and stability, subject to the required prequalification.

MetaWealth said the project was selected based on its long-term market fundamentals and development profile, including secured grid connection rights and a connection point approximately 300 metres from the transmission grid substation, without requiring additional grid reinforcement.

“After reaching financial close and starting construction, our focus is now on delivering the project towards commercial operation in April 2027,” said Michael Topolinski, Founder and CEO of MetaWealth.

The Dumbrava project is part of MetaWealth’s broader Romanian BESS portfolio, which also includes a 48 MW/100 MWh project in Sânpaul, Mureș County, alongside approximately 650 MWh of additional storage capacity currently under development.

The investment comes as Romania accelerates the development of energy storage to support the rapid expansion of renewable generation and improve system flexibility. In March 2026, the European Commission approved a €150 million Romanian state-aid scheme supporting at least 2,174 MWh of new standalone energy storage capacity.
