The president of the governing party in Romania, Liviu Dragnea, was sentenced to 3.6 years imprisonment

The High Court of Cassation and Justice sentenced the Social Democratic Party's chairman, Liviu Dragnea, to 3 years and 6 months imprisonment with execution for instigating abuse of service in the fictitious employment file from the General Directorate for Social Assistance and Child Protection in Teleorman county.

The Supreme Court maintained in the case of Liviu Dragnea the punishment applied by the court of first instance.

The conviction decision was taken by four of the five members of the judging panel, one of the judges making a separate opinion, for referring the case back to the court, on the grounds that that party from the background should have been specialized in corruption offenses.

PSD leaders and several ministers will meet in an emergency sitting after Liviu Dragnea was sentenced to establish the way forward. Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă, acting as executive president, will take over the party as interim president.
